I can't even described how disgusted I am. Three girls from the neighberhood behind ours came down through the woods onto our property and started yelling obscenities at my nine year old brother and his friends. They were screaming the likes of 'jackass', 'fuck you', and 'faggot'. Yes...my nine year old brother got called a faggot.
I am just astonished at how ignorant children are. No, scratch that, I am FLOORED by how ignorant grown ups are, and how badly they are raising their kids. They're sewing in the fabric of ignorance and homophobia and I just can't stand it, it just blows my mind that people are still this way in the 21st century.
My dad and I went to talk to these girls parents, two of which were 9, the other was in 7th grade...so she was what, 12 or 13? Defenitely old enough to know better, defenitely old enough to know not to scream things like that at a nine year old. We talked calmly to the mother and she didn't seem to care. She blamed it on Isaac, saying that he must have provoked it. She never acknowledged that her child did something wrong, or tried to appologize for the way they treated him.
I just got home and my mind is reeling. I feel sick to my stomach. I feel like crying. I know that this is not a huge deal. I know it's rather miniscule. But to see that this is what we have to look forward to for at least another decade with the new generation breaks my heart...I thought we were moving past the hate and the ignorance, but no. We're in the same stagnant puddle of hate, and I'm just not sure if we'll ever get out.
This whole ordeal has just reminded me how important it is to teach kids love, tolerance and acceptance. It's so important that this country fully embraces equality of everyone. Do you think Obama will do that? Do you think McCain will? No. I see these next four years accomplishing nothing on these matters.
I know that people think that our economy is more important, the price of gas, taxes, foreign policy...it's all more important. I say bull. I think the most important thing is us...the human race. And until we can learn to treat each other with respect and dignity and to embrace those different than us...nothing else will really matter.
I just hope I live to see that day.
